  18. <p>     The lights went out just after 7 p.m. Then a granade
  19. exploded and gunfire was heard. With that, a street corner in
  20. Petionville, seven miles outside the capital of Port-au-Prince,
  21. was turned into a horror scene of shattered bodies and mangled
  22. limbs. Seven people were killed and 54 wounded.
  23. </p>
  24. <p>     The carnage occurred at a rally last week for the Rev.
  25. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the popular priest who is the front
  26. runner in this Sunday's presidential elections and a survivor
  27. of at least three assassination attempts. Father Aristide
  28. blamed the violence on the Tontons Macoutes, the notorious
  29. secret police force loyal to the deposed Duvalier dictatorship.
  30. Together with the army, the Macoutes had forced cancellation
  31. of the 1987 elections by massacring 34 voters. But this time
  32. Haitians seemed determined to vote, no matter what calamities
  33. occurred on the campaign trail. Said a caller to Radio
  34. Haiti-Inter: "We're at the last station of the cross on the
  35. Calvary to our elections, and by God, we'll make it."
